Recent Cydia Installer update for legacy jailbreaks includes fix for ModMyi repository URL

If you still use a jailbreak that utilizes the Elucubratus bootstrap, such as checkra1n or unc0ver, then you may have recently noticed an update for Cydia Installer awaiting your attention.

Cydia Installer version 1.1.38 was released just before the Thanksgiving holiday, and it’s the first update to the package in more than four years.

The update raised a lot of questions in the jailbreak community this past week, as the Cydia package manager app isn’t frequently updated. While maintenance updates are rare, they come by way of iOS developer Sam Bingner these days, as Saurik, the original creator of the platform, doesn’t have the time to update it anymore.

Per a post shared on /r/LegacyJailbreak this past week, Bingner announced that Saurik updated the ModMyi repository recently, which triggered an update to Cydia with a mechanism that could update the ModMyi repository URL if users still had the broken repository URL on their device.

The new URL will now be added automatically when users navigate to Cydia → More Package Sources and tap on the ModMyi repository to add it. This occurs whether they previously deleted the repository and are re-adding it, or they have the broken repository still added.

The ModMyi repository was archived a long time ago after ModMyi owner Kyle Matthews decided to shut down the repository and sell the website, but the archive that Saurik now maintains (even today) allows jailbreakers to continue accessing packages that were made available there, including previous purchases.

Jailbreakers can’t make new purchases for paid packages from the ModMyi repository, as the Cydia Store has been out of commission since 2018. This means that it’s impossible for anyone to acquire paid packages from the ModMyi repository unless they owned them before the archival. This is why repositories such as Chariz and Havoc now incorporate their own payment system for paid jailbreak tweak packages.

For modern jailbreaks, including Dopamine and palera1n, this Cydia Installer update is largely irrelevant. That’s because the Cydia package manager is now considered deprecated compared to newer package manager apps such as Sileo and Zebra, which are found on these newer jailbreaks on iOS & iPadOS 15 and later.
