iOS 18.2: Adjust the speed of the Camera Control double-click gesture

Apple’s iOS 18.2 software allows you to adjust the double-click speed of the dedicated Camera Control capture button on the iPhone 16 family.

Camera Control, a physical button with haptic feedback on the right side of the iPhone 16, iPhone 6 Plus, iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max used for launching and interacting with the camera, can distinguish between light and hard presses.

By default, clicking Camera Control once opens your designated camera app, but you can change this to a double-click gesture to avoid accidental launches. And in iOS 18.2, you can also adjust the double-click speed of Camera Control.

As previously reported, iOS 18.2 also brings a two-stage shutter to Camera Control where you lightly press and hold the button once to lock your exposure and focus and then press harder to take an image or record video, DLSR style.

How to adjust Camera Control double-click speed on your iPhone

The option to change the double-click speed for Camera Control is found in the accessibility settings on your iPhone with iOS 18.2.

  1. Open the Settings app on your iPhone.
  2. Choose Accessibility from the main list.
  3. Hit Camera Control under the Physical and Motor section.
  4. Scroll down to the section headlined Double Click Speed and choose one of the three available options:
  • Default: The default double-click speed iOS 18.2 sets after installing.
  • Slow: Require a slower speed to register the double-press gesture.
  • Slower: Use the slowest double-click speed.

Adjusting this setting will not make sense unless you also change the number of clicks it takes to launch a camera app with the Camera Control button from the default single click to a double click in Settings > Camera > Camera Control.

The new Double Click Speed accessibility setting joins the existing Double Light-Press Speed option for controling how fast you need to press the Camera Control button for your iPhone to recognize a light double-press.

The built-in Camera app uses the light double-press gesture to switch between tools such as zoom, exposure control, lenses, depth, photographic styles and more.

Apple also provides APIs for developers to use Camera Control in their camera apps. A recent update to the Kino app, for example, introduced basic Camera Control. You can use Camera Control in Kino to adjust your exposure, tweak focus or quickly switch between grades, with additional faetures coming in later updates.
