PopOutButtons ports iOS 18’s pressed button animation to jailbroken devices on older firmware

One of the things I’ve always liked about jailbreaking is how developers find ways to backport features from newer firmware to older jailbroken firmware. Simple things like this can make even an aging handset seem like a newer one.

Fortunately, iOS developer tesla_man is keeping that exciting tradition alive with the release of a new and free jailbreak tweak called PopOutButtons, which causes a small animation to occur at the edge of your handset’s display when you press any of the buttons on the side of the device like those depicted in the screenshot examples above.

As you might’ve noticed when pushing either of the volume buttons or the sleep/wake button on a stock iOS 18 device, a similar animation occurs. What tesla_man has done is backport this animation to older firmware and made it more customizable than it comes on a stock iOS 18 device.

In the middle screenshot example above, you can see the tweak’s preference pane, which gets added to the Settings app post-installation. From there, you can:

  • Toggle PopOutButtons on or off on demand
  • Hide PopOutButton animations from screenshots
  • Configure Volume Up button animation options:
    • Y offset
    • Size offset
    • Curvedness offset
    • Change the color via a color picker
  • Configure Volume Down button animation options:
    • Y offset
    • Size offset
    • Curvedness offset
    • Change the color via a color picker
  • Configure the Sleep/Wake button animation options:
    • Y offset
    • Size offset
    • Curvedness offset
    • Change the color via a color picker
  • Respring your device to save any changes you’ve made
  • Reset all settings to their defaults
  • And more…

It’s worth noting that while PopOutButtons is a purely aesthetic jailbreak tweak and that it doesn’t change the behavior of your handset or its buttons in any way, it’s a very nice touch. Not only are the animations classy, as they look just like Apple’s own, but they also make your handset feel more modern by replicating the results of a newer firmware on older firmware.

If you’re interested in trying the new PopOutButtons jailbreak tweak for yourself, then you can download it for free from the Chariz repository via your favorite package manager app. The tweak supports jailbroken iOS 15 and 16 devices.
