If you’re unhappy with the search results that the YouTube app serves you when searching for something in particular, such as when looking up how-to videos to get something done in a pinch, then you might take an interest in a newly released and free jailbreak tweak called Gonerino by iOS developer Adrian Castro (castdrian).
This tweak, which was announced in a post shared to /r/jailbreak just this week, can be used to exclude certain YouTube channels from your search results when performing a search query.
It’s no secret that YouTube favors certain larger channels over others and boosts those in your search results as to perpetuate clicks, subscriptions, and monetization. Smaller channels, some of which are often de-monetized, may not show up as often.
Likewise, there are plenty of YouTube channels in particular that like to click bait their viewers, using some crazy claim in their video title only for the video to offer no helpful insight.
Gonerino can help in both circumstances, and perhaps others. As depicted in the screenshot examples above, the tweak adds a new preference pane to the YouTube app where you can add specific YouTube channel names to a list. Consequently, none of the channels added to the aforementioned list will appear in your search query results, offering you a better experience when trying to use YouTube as a help resource.
To add a YouTube channel name to the exclusion list, you need only tap on the “+” button in the preference pane and then enter the name in the Add Channel pop-up prompt. When entered, you can tap on the Add button to confirm or the Cancel button to go back without adding anything.
Should you ever want to remove a YouTube channel that you’ve previously added to this list, you can swipe on it to invoke a Delete Channel pop-up prompt, where you can tap on the Delete button to remove it from the exclusion list or the Cancel button to go back without removing anything.
It’s a pretty simple tweak that I didn’t even know I needed until I started using it, and now that I am, I’m happy I found it.
If you’re interested in giving the Gonerino jailbreak tweak a try, then you can download it for free from the developer’s GitHub page. The tweak obviously requires the YouTube app from the App Store, and it’s worth noting that it also supports jailbroken iOS & iPadOS 15 and 16 devices.
