Single Mute ports the Status Bar’s mute icon from the iPhone 15 series and later to older devices

One of the unique features about the iPhone 15 series and later is that they remove the single-function ringer/silent switch in favor of the newer Action Button, which users can re-assign to different functions that are completely separate of ringer/silent controls.

This change enticed Apple to introduce a new Status Bar icon on these devices to let users know when their device is in silent mode. The icon looks like a bell with a diagonal line crossed through it, as depicted above.

This simple, yet aesthetically pleasing icon made users of older handsets slightly jealous, so iOS developer 82flex released a new and free jailbreak tweak this week called Single Mute, which ports it over to older handsets with the now-legacy ringer/silent switch.

As you might come to expect, the tweak ports the entire functionality of the Status Bar icon to older handsets, so the icon appears in your Status Bar when you turn silent mode on and disappears from your Status Bar when you turn ringer mode on. That said, it’s not just for show.

The Single Mute tweak also adds a dedicated preference pane to the Settings app, shown above, which lets users configure a number of options, including:

  • Toggle Single Mute on or off on demand
  • Enable lower priority for the mute icon than the location usage icon
  • Respring your device to apply changes

Being able to make the location usage icon a higher priority is a cool setting because this means you will be able to see when your location is being used even when the silent icon would normally appear in your Status Bar. This means the tweak won’t prevent you from knowing when your location is being tracked, which can offer peace of mind for some users.

Those interested in trying the Single Mute jailbreak tweak can download it for free from the Havoc repository via their favorite package manager app. The tweak supports jailbroken iOS 15 and 16 devices only at this time and is open source on the developer’s GitHub page.
