One of the convenient aspects of having an LED flash built into your smartphone is that you can use it as a flashlight in a pinch. The iPhone is no different in that respect, but it’s lacking in features that some users could find extraordinarily useful.
iOS developer wrp1002 recognizes this shortcoming, and decided to tackle it head on with the release of a free jailbreak tweak called FlashlightSettings.
Citing the /r/jailbreak announcement post, FlashlightSettings is designed to provide jailbroken iPhone users with variety of useful options to augment their device’s built-in flashlight capabilities.
Once installed, the FlashlightSettings tweak adds a brand-new preference pane to the Settings app on their device where users can configure several options relating to the flashlight to their liking:
Among the different things that users can configure here are:
- Toggle FlashlightSettings on or off on demand
- Toggle automatic screen locking on or off when the flashlight is turned on
- Toggle disable raise to wake when the flashlight is turned on
- Toggle disable tap to wake when the flashlight is turned on
- Configure a custom flashlight shortcut
- Toggle set maximum brightness when using the flashlight shortcut
- Toggle an automatic flashlight timeout to prevent keeping the flashlight on inadvertently
- Enter a number of minutes after which the flashlight turns off automatically
- And more…
One of the things we can definitely appreciate here are the new settings for changing raise to wake and tap to wake behavior when the flashlight is turned on. These can be useful in certain scenarios when you might be handling your iPhone differently than you normally would, such as when using it as a flashlight under the hood of a car and don’t want the screen turning on by mistake.
Likewise, we think it’s awesome that the tweak includes a timeout feature, because I can’t even count the number of times I’ve witnessed people putting their iPhone back in their pocket, flashlight blazing, and not even realizing it because it was sunny outside or because the office lights were too bright for them to notice.
Those looking to take advantage of the FlashlightSettings jailbreak tweak can download it for free from the developer’s repository via their favorite package manager app. The tweak is fully compatible with jailbroken iOS 12, 13, 14, 15 and 16 devices, and for those interested, it’s also open source on the developer’s GitHub page for anyone who wants to learn more about what makes it tick.
Anyone who isn’t already usng Wes’ repository can add it to their package manager app by using the URL below:
