The palera1n jailbreak team released an updated version of the palera1n semi-tethered jailbreak for iOS & iPadOS 15.0 and later early Saturday morning, officially bringing the checkm8 bootrom exploit-based tool up to version 2.0.1.
In a post shared via the palera1n team’s official X (formerly Twitter) account, we learn that palera1n v2.0.1 is a bug fix-centric update. Clicking into the shared GitHub link where the updated version of the tool is being distributed from, we find the official change log, which includes the following changes:
– Work around a stock bug not creating the over-provisioning volume in 18.0 beta 5.
– Attempts to fix preboot permissions on rootless
– Loader: now disables idleTimer when attempting to install, to avoid aborting when the device sleeps.
– Loader: Work around very specific edge-case to where the user has manually removed/var/jb
while keeping the fakeroot intact, prompting the user to reboot the device to proceed with any Loader install actions.
– Loader: fixed improper handling of certain keys in a malformed configuration file, also prompting the user that the environment is not supported if the environment doesn’t exist.
Existing palera1n jailbreak users are highly advised to update to the latest version of the jailbreak because since this is a bug fix update, it can improve the user experience.
New and prospective palera1n jailbreak users should also start by using the latest version of the tool at the time they choose to use it for the same reason, otherwise they run the risk of experiencing unwanted bugs on their first use.
Because the palera1n jailbreak is based on the unpatchable checkm8 hardware-based bootrom exploit, it continues to be updated even to this very day with support for the upcoming iPadOS 18 firmware for the one arm64 device that can actually run it – the iPad (7th generation).
You can learn more about palera1n and the different devices you can use it on via the project’s GitHub page. You can also use our step-by-step tutorial to learn how to get jailbroken with palera1n and run your favorite jailbreak tweaks in a rootless environment.
The palera1n jailbreak can effectively jailbreak any iOS or iPadOS 15, 16, or 17, device so long as it has an A11 chip or older inside. A12 and newer devices, often referred to as arm64e devices, require more security-defeating techniques to jailbreak, which is why they take so much longer to jailbreak. Tools like Dopamine and XinaA15 v2 use such techniques to enable jailbreaking up to certain versions of iOS & iPadOS 16.
