How to speed up or slow down a video on iPhone

Learn how to speed up or slow down videos and screen recordings on your iPhone or iPad using free apps for better video editing and playback.

Changing video speed on iPhone

Speeding a video clip cuts down the run time and can also reduce the file size. It allows the viewer to see more in a short duration and can help skim through boring or slow parts of a video. You can also speed up a lengthy video to make it suitable for uploading to online services that have a shorter time limit.

Conversely, slowing down a video clip can make it more dramatic, romantic, dreamy, or nostalgic. But note that when you slow down a video clip, the final run time increases, and so can the file size, leading to longer export times in the apps we mention below.

Using the advanced editor

The basic editor speeds up or slows down the entire video clip. But the advanced editor lets you speed up and slow down just the specific parts of a clip or keep other parts normal, thus dramatically enhancing your final video.

Drag the dots up to speed up that specific part of the clip, or drag them down to slow it down. The portion of the video between two dots will have that speed-up or slow-down effect. If the default dots are not enough for your editing needs, you can add dots as needed and drag them up or down accordingly to add more points with a changed speed.

Best free iOS apps to speed up or slow down video clips

I tried over a dozen iPhone and iPad apps that let you speed up or slow down a clip, and the one we mentioned above is the simplest. In addition to that, here are some of the other excellent free apps you can use for this job.

Slow Motion Video Fx Editor: The app is simple to use and has extra features like adding filters and music to your video. You can also use the Volume tab to mute the clip and the Settings tab to choose a video quality and file type.

Slow-Fast Motion Video Editor: In addition to changing the video speed, you can add music, adjust volume, change the video brightness, contrast, exposure, saturation, shadows, and much more. I found the app to export the video quickly and reliably.

Inshot: This is one of the most popular video editing apps, and it has a Speed tool to make the clip go fast or slow. The app works well, but you will have to watch a long ad or make an in-app purchase to remove the watermark from the final video.

Easy Video Speed Editor: The free version of the app lets you choose from just four video speeds. However, the app is simple to use, and you can make a one-time purchase to remove the restrictions. It also has an option to flip your video.

Slow Motion Video Editor: The app works well and has both a basic (conventional) and advanced (curved) video editor. However, the free version shows tons of long ads at regular intervals.

Splice: This is a robust video editor app with several tools, including the one to change the video speed. However, we have mentioned it at the bottom because, unlike all the other apps in this list, Splice requires an internet connection to work. Furthermore, the free version does not let you export in 4K resolution.
