YouChooseQuality lets jailbroken YouTube users select a preferred video quality for all playback

On Saturday, July 20th, iOS developer PoomSmart held a poll on social media platform 𝕏 (formerly Twitter) to find out if there was any interest in a jailbreak tweak that would automatically impose the user’s video quality of choice on every YouTube video they played. Nearly an astounding 80% of voters said yes.

Consequently, PoomSmart made good on the poll. Given the popularity of such an idea, the developer released a new and free jailbreak tweak this week called YouChooseQuality, and it gives YouTube app users more control over their video playback quality, as shown above.

In a nutshell, users may select their preferred video quality, be it 480p or 720p for playback optimization over slower internet connections, 1080p for great picture quality over mid-tier connections, or 4K or better for ultra-fast connections. All videos played by the end user will then automatically play using the selected quality when played from the YouTube app (not the website).

With the help of YouChooseQuality, you will no longer have the YouTube app auto-selecting the video quality for you each time you play a video. More importantly, this means you can choose to play videos in the highest possible quality, regardless of attempts by carriers to throttle your playback to lesser-quality video streams.

In my case, T-Mobile’s ultra-fast 5G UC cellular connections can handle anything from 4K to 8K with ease, so I’d probably set it to 4K and forget it so that YouTube never auto-selects 720p or 1080p again unless the video literally isn’t available in 4K or higher playback resolution. I can only assume other carriers might be able to provide similar 5G or LTE experiences, depending on location; of course, fast Wi-Fi should also be acceptable.

Those interested in giving the new YouChooseQuality jailbreak tweak a try can download it for free from PoomSmart’s personal repository via their favorite package manager app. The tweak supports jailbroken devices with the YouTube app installed on them.
