It was only a couple of weeks ago that we showed you a work-in-progress jailbreak tweak called Witcher by iOS developer MatoiDev that aimed to replace the native App Switcher’s dull user experience with a more effective and exciting-to-use multitasking interface that utilizes a customizable carousel-like interface.
Today, the Witcher jailbreak tweak has officially launched, and it’s being branded by the developer as a “magical iOS App Switcher” that saves time between app switches by letting you move between apps without lifting your finger from the screen.
As you can see in the screenshot examples above, Witcher presents as a carousel-like interface at the bottom of the screen that you invoke at any time by swiping up from the bottom of the display. While the interface is open, you keep your finger on your screen and you drag over to the app you want to use.
Likewise, the carousel interface includes a built-in Spotlight search shortcut, as well as a back button and a close button. And for apps that you used a much longer time ago that don’t appear in the main interface, you can use the App Switcher button on the left side of the carousel to view those apps to open them with ease.
Personally, I’m highly attracted to the look and feel of the interface, and I can picture myself using this frequently over the stock iOS App Switcher due to how fun it looks. Moreover, I think it’ll be a better fit for one-handed use than the basic App Switcher that comes on the device by default. Could this mean that it’s better for multitasking? Possibly. But whether it is or not will be subjective. The bigger deal here is the user experience.
Once installed, Witcher adds a dedicated preference pane to the Settings app where you can configure a few options to your liking:
Among the different things you can do here are:
- Toggle Witcher on or off on demand
- Enable or disable hardware button mode
- Customize the UI colors:
- Choose a main color
- Choose a cell tint color
- Hide or show the action buttons
The developer says that you don’t need to respring your device to save any changes, as they take effect on the fly.
At this time, Witcher is only compatible with jailbroken iOS 15 devices. Support for iOS 16 will come in a future update. If you’re interested in trying the tweak out for yourself, then you can download it for free from the Havoc repository via your favorite package manager app. Honestly, I’m surprised to see that this isn’t a paid jailbreak tweak.
