Review: New genuine leather cable organizers and EDC pouches by Woolnut

Without a way to tame my day-bag, the cable spaghetti and dongle disaster that is the life of a modern Apple user is unfortunate. At any given time, about five to six cables are required on-hand at a moments notice, especially if working in the modern hybrid environment. Woolnut‘s new line of every day carry leather pouches and cable organizer is a high quality Scandinavian leather option for taming the sloppy cable mess.

Every day carry leather organizer

If you are looking for something in the $20 range, just find a synthetic pouch with plastic zippers on Amazon. This isn’t that pouch. This is something to pair with a range of other high-end professional every day carry items, like cases, sleeves and folios, which is exactly what Woolnut offers.

The flagship of this new leather organizer lineup is the Leather Tech Organizer. In a boxy rectangular package (8.5 inch W; 2 inch H; 5.3 inch D), there is a lot of room to store all of your bricks, cables, and smaller accessories. Currently, I have seven, three-to-six foot cables carefully tucked in my review unit. The overall size of the organizer is just the right size to tuck into the bottom of my day-bag, which is a Tumi Alpha-Bravo backpack.

As depicted below, it has plenty of room for your needs. Instead of just an empty shell for tossing everything, Leather Tech Organizer uses a series of internal sleeves and elastic tabs to tuck all of your items. Too many EDC cases are just enclosures to shove stuff.

Like all of the new leather carry pouches, the Leather Tech Organizer uses Woolnut’s genuine Scandinavian leather and sturdy YKK zippers, on both the inside and outside of the pouch. The exterior zipper is a YKK EXCELLA metal fob which offers a smooth open and closer action each time. The case is semi-rigid and holds it shape, even without contents.

The Leather Tech Organizer comes in a premium quality build and material combination. As such, the price does match that construction at $129 on Woolnut’s website. It is a premium price for a premium product. Given the overall attention to detail, interior organization, and quality leather and construction, it does command the price point, but I’d love to see it under $100. You can order the Organizer in black, cognac, green, gray and blue, which is exclusive to this design.

Woolnut Leather Pouch

I have been using the Leather Pouch in my day bag since Woolnut sent it over for review. Inside I keep: small iPhone tripod; 2x USB-C to Lightning; 2x USB-C to USB-C; MacBook Pro MagSafe cable; and 20v charging brick. There is still room for more in this pouch; it isn’t even bulging.

The shape is tear-dropped at 1.6 inches on the bottom depth, 5.9 inches tall, and 8.3 inches wide. Given the larger bottom, it does stand upright if that’s important to you. Inside, two pockets keep items organized instead of it just being a place to randomly stuff everything. I could actually do with pockets on both sides, instead of just one.

Made with Woolnut’s Scandinavian leather, interior microfiber, and exclusive Japanese YKK zippers, the pouch is a high quality product and shows no signs of wear, even after several months in-and-out of my day bag. It is made up of small details like the leather covered zipper stop pictured below.

The $89 price point is a bit steep for a a place to collect odds-and-ends. However, the quality materials, like supple genuine leather attempt to justify the price. Even with the laundry list of build materials that make the pouch a luxurious experience, it is still a bit tough to justify.

When compared to say a $59 iPhone case, there is a significant amount of more leather and materials here. It is certainly geared toward an audience that is already looking for premium accessories or adding to a current high end collection. Given those intentions, it is well fitted to the market from a build quality perspective.

Leather Pouch (flat)

Akin to the Leather Pouch, the flat model lacks the tear drop design. Two flat pieces of leather are stitched together and closed with a premium YKK zipper.

At 8.3 inches wide, 6.3 inches high, and .6 inches deep, it is overall a trimmer option in comparison to the non-flat option. A single main compartment still has enough space for a phone, passport and maybe some AirPods plus a cable or chapstick.

At most, carrying a handful of cables would be possible, but would cause the shape to bulge. Admittedly, of the three pouches debuted, I have used the flat version the least. It feels more like a “clutch” or something to grab on your way out that contains just your essentials. If I’m going to store something like this in an every day backpack, I’d rather have the additional space of the non-flat pouch.

The flat pouch is offered at $85, which is only $4 short of the larger non-flat design. Unless you need a completely flat design, just spend the extra few dollars and get more storage space.

Overall

My thanks to Woolnut for sending over these pouches. I really love high quality, every day carry style accessories and have enjoyed these upscaling my office experience. In fact, I had several co-workers ask me about the leather pouch when I pulled it out of my backpack for a charging cable. One of them even tried to convince me to give it to them because I had two!

All of the carriers are offered in black, cognac, green and gray, with the Organizer coming in blue as well. The line up is priced at a premium, which matches the quality build materials. However, the function of simply holding stuff in a small container can be offered in much less expensive alternatives.

To conclude, if you are cost sensitive, you probably aren’t looking for genuine Scandinavian leather accessories for your day-bag. Woolnut even has a materials overview. If you are in the market to upgrade your every day carry essentials, the supple Woolnut pouches will easily please even the most discerning tastes–like mine.

I’d love the option to purchase multiples of these options at a bundled price. Whether that is buying 2-3 of the same pouch or even 1 of each, it would be great to see a discount for a multi-bag purchase. Perhaps you could mix and match colors as part of the bundle, so you can color code the contents, if you have all of them in a single backpack.

If customization were an option, it would be awesome to have an interior color other than black or gray as well. Something like a bright orange interior adds a fun surprising look, but can also make it easier to find little bits that may be floating around in the main compartment.
