TrollInstallerX developer delivers unfortunate news regarding TrollStore and iOS 18

Apple has no doubt continued to further harden the securities of the iPhone and iPad with iOS & iPadOS 18 – the new firmware update that will launch for iPhones and iPads this Fall, and that can already be installed as a developer beta on eligible devices.

TrollStore doomed on iOS 18?

Apple knows it’s ahead of the hacking curve, as there’s no public jailbreak for arm64e devices (A12 and later) running iOS & iPadOS 17 yet. Consequently, the Cupertino-based company has pulled no punches to keep iOS & iPadOS 18 just as secure, if not more-so.

In a post shared to X (formerly Twitter), TrollInstallerX project lead developer and TrollStore 2.0 co-developer @alfiecg_dev said that iOS & iPadOS 18 introduced new security features that could preclude TrollStore supporting iOS & iPadOS 18, regardless of whether another CoreTrust bug were to be released. The full quote below:

iOS 18 seems to have introduced a new security feature meaning that arbitrarily-entitled binaries not running as root can no longer spawn binaries as root. This means that in the event of another CoreTrust bug, it is unlikely that TrollStore would be able to support iOS 18.

In summary, it seems unlikely that the TrollStore perma-signing utility can be updated to support iOS & iPadOS 18 or later.

TrollStore has long been used as a means to install .ipa or .tipa files on iPhones and iPads outside of the App Store without the need to sideload. Apps installed with TrollStore remain signed indefinitely, without using an Apple ID to sign apps as is required with sideloading methods such as AltStore and Sideloadly. On the other hand, sideloading methods such as AltStore and Sideloadly do still work on iOS & iPadOS 18.

While this definitely isn’t the best news, TrollStore had a good, long run, and continues to be widely used on iOS & iPadOS 16 and older (even 17.0, for the lucky few who managed install it before 17.0 became unsigned). The powerful CoreTrust bug harnessed by TrollStore enabled entitlements that, when paired with a good kernel exploit, made ‘semi-jailbreaks’ like Serotonin possible.

It doesn’t seem like a jailbreak for iOS & iPadOS 18 will be coming out any time soon since we’re still waiting on one for iOS & iPadOS 17 devices (except for checkm8 devices), so the best advice we can give to those hoping for a jailbreak is to stay on the lowest possible firmware and avoid updates since every update seems to make jailbreaking more difficult.
