In this tutorial, we will show you how to AirPlay audio playing in Google Chrome or any other web browsers on your Mac to your HomePod, Sonos, and other AirPlay-compatible speakers. We will also go over AirPlaying to your Apple TV from Chrome.
When growing the web in Safari, and if a website supports it, Apple’s AirPlay icon is shown somewhere on the media player. However, that very website won’t show the AirPlay icon if you access it in Chrome, Firefox, Edge, Opera, or any other browser.
Thankfully, macOS has a system-wide AirPlay control that lets you listen to songs playing in Chrome or other browsers on HomePod, Sonos, and other AirPlay-supported devices. It should work even if a website has no dedicated built-in AirPlay support.
AirPlay from Chrome on Mac to HomePod, Sonos, and other devices
1) Open Chrome or the web browser in question and play a song or video.
2) With media playing, click the Control Center icon from the upper right corner of the menu bar.
3) Click the AirPlay icon in the Sound tile.
4) Select your HomePod, Sonos, or other AirPlay-compatible device. You can even pick more than one AirPlay device. The audio will now come through the selected speaker.
You can now go to the Home app on your iPhone or iPad, and you will see that media from Chrome is playing on your HomePod.
AirPlay videos from Google Chrome to Apple TV
If you’re playing YouTube, Dailymotion, or a similar service in Safari on your Mac, you will see an AirPlay icon, and clicking it will let you stream this video to your Apple TV.
However, those sites won’t show the AirPlay icon when you play them outside of Safari, like in Google Chrome.
In this situation, you can follow the steps as HomePod and select your Apple TV from the AirPlay menu in Mac’s Control Center. However, this will only AirPlay the audio to your Apple TV. The video will continue to play inside Chrome.
Chrome extension to AirPlay video to Apple TV
Searching for “AirPlay” in the Chrome extensions web store shows no results. If you tweak the search term, you will find AirPlay remote extensions, but none let your AirPlay video from Chrome on Mac onto your Apple TV.
I scoured the internet and stumbled upon a Chrome extension called ChromePlay on GitHub. I followed the instructions, which involved installing this extension using developer mode in Chrome on my Mac. It also instructed changing my Apple TV name to fill the gaps with dashes (–) and adding .local to the end of the name. So, if the current name is Apple TV, I changed it to Apple-TV.local.
However, the extension failed to work, no matter what troubleshooting steps I took. This is because the extension has not been updated in several years. It was tested for Chrome version 48, and the current Chrome version is 123+!
So to sum up, there isn’t a working way to AirPlay video from Chrome on your Mac to Apple TV. If you find or develop one, please let us know.
However, if you are still interested in seeing your Chrome video on Apple TV or other AirPlay-compatible television, you can mirror your entire Mac screen to it. For this, go to macOS Control Center, click the Screen Mirroring icon, and choose your Apple TV.
Once the mirroring starts, you can click the screen mirroring icon in the menu bar and choose to use Apple TV as a separate display.
After that, hover the cursor over the green expand button in Chrome’s window and move it to your Apple TV. You can move your mouse pointer from your Mac to your Apple TV to control the window there.
