tvOS 17.5.1 fixes a reappearing Photos bug on the Apple TV

With the release of tvOS 17.5.1, Apple brought the fix for the reappearing photos bug from iOS 17.5.1 and iPadOS 17.5.1 to your Apple TV.

Released on May 21, 2024, tvOS 17.5.1 is an emergency fix for the reappearing photos bug. Shortly after iOS 17.5 was released, some folks complained on Reddit about suddenly seeing images in the Photos app that were long deleted. In some cases, supposedly deleted images resurfaced years after being deleted.

Apple fixed this shocking bug on the iPhone and iPad by releasing iOS and iPadOS 17.5.1 on May 20. And now, the same fix is available on your Apple TV.

What’s new in tvOS 17.5.1?

According to Apple’s support document, which highlights the changes in the Apple TV software updates, tvOS 17.5.1 “addresses a rare issue where photos that experienced database corruption could reappear in the Photos library even if they were deleted.” No other information was provided.

The update doesn’t seem to include any security patches because none are listed on Apple’s page highlighting security fixes for its software. There was no matching macOS update released today. It’s unclear if this bug doesn’t affect the Mac, but we’ll let you know if Apple releases a matching macOS update.
