SmartVPN offers a better way to use VPNs on jailbroken devices

People are especially particular about privacy these days, which might explain why virtual private network (VPN) apps have become so popular for cloaking internet activity. But what if you could have even more control over your VPN than Apple gives you out of the box?

While your hands are tied on stock devices, those sporting jailbreakers can take advantage of a free jailbreak tweak called SmartVPN by iOS developer b4db1r3 to achieve greater control over when their VPN does and doesn’t connect.

Sound familiar? We showed you a similar tweak back in 2017 by iOS developer zyb, but it was time for a tweak like this to make its way to modern jailbreaks, and that’s where b4db1r3 came in.

One of the primary features of SmartVPN is the ability to control VPN connections on a per-app basis. The tweak adds a dedicated preference pane to the Settings app post-installation where you can whitelist apps that will automatically trigger a VPN connection when launched:

SmartVPN whitelist.

Additionally, SmartVPN adds a Control Center-based VPN toggle button by way of CCSupport, so it will need to be enabled from the Control Center preference pane in the Settings app before it can be used:

SmartVPN CCSupport add-on.

It’s a wonder that Apple hasn’t incorporated a Control Center-based VPN toggle button in stock iOS yet, but thanks to SmartVPN, we don’t have to wait for one.

I think it’s also slick that the tweak automates connections for apps that you deem sensitive. This is perfect for ensuring that your VPN app automatically connects when trying to access an app that may be blocked in your region or ensuring that app usage remains cloaked under the guise of another IP address.

If you’re interested in giving SmartVPN a try, then you can download it for free from the YouRepo repository via your favorite package manager app. The tweak supports jailbroken devices running iOS & iPadOS 15 and 16.

If you’re not already using the YouRepo repository, then you can add it to your package manager app by using the URL provided below:
