Learn how to temporarily deactivate or permanently delete your Threads account using your iPhone, Android phone, or web browser without deactivating, deleting, or affecting your main Instagram account.
When Meta (the parent company of Facebook and Instagram) launched Threads as the Twitter competition, you, like millions of other people, may have created an account on it as it was very simple. All you had to do was log in with your Instagram username and password and go through some introductory splash screens.
However, you may have realized that it’s not as great as Twitter when it comes to making text-based posts. Whatever the reason for you to no longer use Threads may be, here’s how you can get rid of your account.
The difference between deactivating and deleting your Threads account
Deactivating is a temporary measure that you can do just once every week. After you deactivate your Threads profile, all your posts, comments, profile page, and other interactions done on the platform will be hidden and not visible to anyone. You should choose this if you’re just looking to take a break while keeping the option to recover your content in the future.
On the other hand, deleting your Threads account is permanent. After you follow the steps to delete your Threads account, your profile and all its content is hidden from everyone for 30 days. And after these 30 days, everything is deleted.
If you change your mind within these 30 days, you can simply log in to the Thread app or website using your old login credentials to cancel the deletion process. After this, your profile and all your posts, comments, etc., will be visible once again to others.
Deactivate or delete your Threads account without affecting your Instagram account
Using the Threads app
1) Open the official Threads app on your iPhone, iPad, or Android phone and tap the account icon from the bottom right.
2) Tap the menu icon from the top and select Account.
Tip: If you’re planning to delete your account, you can tap Download your information first.
3) Select Deactivate or delete profile.
4) Tap Deactivate profile and confirm or hit Delete profile, enter your Instagram password, and tap the red Delete Threads profile button.
Using Threads in a browser
1) Visit threads.net in a computer browser and log in using your Instagram username and password.
2) Click the menu icon from the top right and choose Settings.
3) Go to the Account tab.
4) Click Deactivate or delete profile.
5) Select Deactivate profile or Delete profile.
What if you deactivate or delete your Instagram account
As mentioned, deactivating or deleting your Threads account does not affect your Instagram account. However, if you deactivate or delete your Instagram account, it will also deactivate or delete your Threads account. This is because Threads uses the same login credentials as your Instagram account.
Make a new Threads account
After you deactivate your Threads account, there is no need to create a new account. Simply log in using your Instagram username and password to restore your Threads profile.
However, after you delete your Threads account, you will have to wait 90 days, and then you can create a Threads account using the same Instagram account username and password.
