Whenever a contact from your address book creates a Telegram account, the app will send you a notification saying “Contact Joined Telegram.” This is meant to encourage you to switch to Telegram for chatting.

However, if you find this notification annoying or unnecessary, you can easily turn it off.

The steps are nearly identical, regardless of platform.

On iPhone, iPad, or Mac

  1. Open the Telegram app and tap Settings.
  2. Tap Notifications and Sounds.
  3. Scroll down and turn off the switch for New Contacts.

From now on, you should not receive a push notification when a person from your contacts registers on Telegram.

Another way: Don’t give Telegram access to your contacts

If you only use Telegram for channels, groups, or bots and don’t message friends or family, there’s no need to allow the app access to your phone contacts. By denying access, Telegram won’t be able to notify you when someone from your contacts joins the platform.

You can prevent the app from accessing your contacts during setup, or revoke access later using the following steps:

  1. Open the iPhone Settings app.
  2. Scroll down to Privacy & Security.
  3. Select Contacts to see all iOS apps that have requested access to your phone contacts.
  4. Tap Telegram and set it to None.

Now that Telegram no longer has access to your iPhone contacts, the next step is to clear your contacts from Telegram’s servers.

  1. Open Telegram and tap Settings.
  2. Tap Privacy and Settings.
  3. Scroll to the bottom and tap Data Settings.
  4. Tap Delete Synced Contacts and confirm by hitting Delete.

You’ve successfully removed your contacts from Telegram’s server, meaning you’ll no longer receive alerts when someone from your contacts joins the service.
