In this tutorial, we show you how you can change the speedometer megabit scale in the popular Speedtest app for iPhone, iPad, and Android phone.
The Speedtest app by Ookla is among the most popular ways people test the speed of their internet connection. But most don’t realize the configurative capabilities of the app before they tap the big “GO” button.
With internet speeds exploding exponentially from averages of 100 megabits a decade ago to well over a gigabit today, it seemed like a good time to remind everyone that the Speedtest app lets you change the ‘speedometer’ scale to suit your internet speeds.
You can adjust the Speedtest app’s speedometer scale to one of three maximum speed settings, including a minimum of 100 megabits per second, a median of 500 megabits per second, and a maximum of 1,000 megabits per second.
Change the Speedtest app’s speedometer scale
- Launch the Speedtest app on your iPhone, iPad, or Android phone.
- Swipe up on the grabber below the GO button.
- Tap the speedometer scale you want to use.
- Drag down the grabber and run a speed test.
Note: Selecting too small of a scale for faster internet connections means that the speedometer will peg to the max, yielding a misleading aesthetic.
The Speedtest app will remember your selection for all speed tests going forward, so it’s not necessary to change the speedometer scale more than once unless you want to adjust it for a specific network.
Now, when you perform a speed test using the Speedtest app, it will use the scale you selected. Notice the different speedometer readouts and their positions.
Changing the Speedtest app’s speedometer scale is a quick and easy process that can yield more pleasant aesthetics in today’s fast-internet world. Don’t settle for a peg-to-the-max effect when you don’t have to.
