AirTag with a low battery icon around it

Apple doesn’t usually make products that allow the user to replace their battery, but AirTag is an exception. AirTag uses a regular, non-rechargeable CR2032 3V cell that’s also used in car key fobs, calculators, watches, toys, pet collars, and other such items.

My AirTag battery lasted close to three years but this can be significantly less if you track your AirTags and play sound on it frequently. However, in most regular cases, the AirTag battery should last for over a year.

Once its battery needs replacement, you will see a red battery icon for AirTag in the Find My app on your iPhone. Additionally, Find My will send you notifications asking you to replace the battery.

So, if your AirTag’s battery is low, buy a CR2032 coin battery from Amazon or your local electronic store/pharmacy.

Once you have the right battery, remove the AirTag from the AirTag accessory it’s attached to and follow the steps below.

How to replace your AirTag battery

  1. Turn the AirTag on its plastic side, with the Apple logo facing you.
  2. Hold the AirTag with two fingers, push down, and twist the stainless steel cover counterclockwise. The cover will pop out.
  3. Remove the CR2032 battery and replace it with a new one with the + side facing up.
  4. Place the stainless steel cap back and twist it clockwise till it locks in place.

What to do if the AirTag battery is low, even after replacing it

I recently replaced the battery on my AirTag, but it kept showing a red low battery icon in the Find My app even though I had used a new battery!

If you face this issue, the following tips will help:

  • Remove the battery, reseat it properly, and close the back cover.
  • Restart your iPhone, turn on its Bluetooth from the Settings app, and wait for an hour.
  • Use a different CR2032 battery.

The last method worked in my case. Earlier, I had used the spare CR2032 battery that came with a new Android-based Bluetooth tracker I had just purchased. But this battery didn’t work well with my AirTag and kept showing the red low battery icon in the Find My app. Then, I purchased a CR2032 coin battery by Duracell from my local shop, and it worked like a charm. The low battery message disappeared from the Find My app.
