The standard action for taking a screenshot on the iPhone is to press and hold the Side and Volume Up buttons. Now, what if the hardware buttons on the iPhone aren’t working or you use a hard case that makes it a padifficultn to press both buttons together? What do you do then?

Well, luckily, there are easy ways to take a screenshot on an iPhone without using buttons.

Use Siri or Vocal Shortcuts

  1. Make sure you are on the screen you want to screenshot.
  2. Say, “Hey Siri, take a screenshot.”

If you have not set up hands-free Siri, you can turn it on from iPhone Settings > Siri or invoke Siri using other methods and ask it to grab a screenshot.

If you use the new iOS 18 Vocal Shortcuts feature on your iPhone, you can create an action for taking a screenshot and then say the set word or phrase to capture one.

Use the on-screen AssistiveTouch button

AssistiveTouch puts a multi-capable floating button on your iPhone or iPad screen, and you can use it to do all sorts of things, including taking screenshots. We have a full tutorial showing you how to use and customize AssistiveTouch, but here’s a recap.

  1. Go to iPhone Settings > Accessibility > Touch > AssistiveTouch and turn on the switch for AssistiveTouch.
  2. Now, tap the on-screen virtual button and go to Device > More > Screenshot to take one.
  3. If step 2 feels lengthy, go back to the AssistiveTouch screen and set Single-Tap, Double-Tap, or Long Press to take a Screenshot.

Use Back Tap

You can tap the back of your iPhone twice or thrice to trigger an action like taking a screenshot. Go to iPhone Settings > Accessibility > Touch > Back Tap and set Double or Triple Tap to take a Screenshot.

Use your Mac

If you’re already on your computer, you can use iPhone Mirroring to see your phone screen on your Mac and take a screenshot of that window.

You can also connect your iPhone to your Mac with a cable and then use QuickTime to take a screenshot. This trick can also be used to take a screenshot or screen recording of your Apple TV.

1) Open QuickTime and click File > New Movie Recording from the top menu bar.

2) Click the arrow and select your iPhone or iPad. You will now see your iOS device screen in QuickTime.

3) Make sure none of the on-screen elements of QuickTime are showing, and take a screenshot of that window.

What about using just one button to take a screenshot?

If you have an iPhone 15 Pro or 15 Pro Max, you can create a simple shortcut and assign it to the Action Button. This will ensure you do not have to press two buttons simultaneously but just one to take a screenshot.

  1. Go to the Apple Shortcuts app and tap the plus button.
  2. Search for the Take Screenshot action and add it. After that, add the Save to Photo Album action so the screenshot can be saved to your Photos app and tap Done.
  3. With the shortcut built, go to iPhone Settings > Action Button.
  4. Swipe to the Shortcut screen and select the shortcut you built in step 2.
  5. With everything set, go to the screen whose screenshot you want to capture, and press and hold the Action button to grab one.
