Learn how to manually turn Dark Mode on or off in Facebook and Messenger on your iPhone, or have them follow your device’s Dark Mode settings.
On OLED displays, pixels are lit up individually, so there’s no need for backlight. Contrast this with LCD panels that do require power-hungry backlight to illuminate the pixels. As a result, using Dark Mode on OLED devices like the iPhone X and newer tends to conserve battery life.
Dark Mode replaces light user interface elements with predominantly black or darkened counterparts. This helps reduce eye stains when using Facebook at night.
Manage Dark Mode on Facebook
You can activate Dark Mode or Light Mode and leave these apps to always work in that particular mode. If you do not want to fix them at that, you can have these apps enter and exit Dark Mode based on your iPhone’s Dark Mode settings.
Facebook app
1) Open the Facebook app on your iPhone or iPad and tap the Menu button.
2) Tap Settings & privacy and select Settings.
3) Scroll down to the Preferences heading, tap Dark mode, and set it to one of the following:
- On: Always use Facebook in Dark Mode, even when your iPhone is in Light Mode.
- Off: Always use Facebook in Light Mode, even if your iPhone is in Dark Mode.
- System: Set the Facebook app to follow your iPhone’s appearance. That means if your iPhone is in Dark Mode, Facebook will also enter Dark Mode, and vice versa.
On Facebook web
Follow these steps if you use Facebook in Safari or another web browser on your phone.
1) Visit Facebook.com and make sure you’re signed in.
2) Tap the menu button from the top.
3) Scroll down and turn Dark mode on or off.
If you are using Facebook in a computer browser, click your profile picture, followed by Display & accessibility to turn Dark mode on or off. You can also set it to Automatic to have it follow your Mac or Windows PC’s Dark Mode settings.
Facebook Messenger
1) Go inside the Messenger app and tap the menu button from the upper left corner of the screen.
2) Tap the settings icon.
3) Select Dark mode and set it to On, Off, or System. The basics for these three options are similar to what we have explained in the Facebook section above.
