Learn how to customize your reminder lists on iPhone, iPad, and Mac using colors, emojis, and symbols to enhance usability or add a touch of style.

Reminder Lists on iPhone personalized in various colors, icons, and emojis

Instead of keeping several reminder entries or to-dos in a single list, you can tap the Add List button to create a new one.

The look and feel of a list may not seem like a big deal, but it can help you organize better and quickly identify what you need. With 12 colors to choose from, you can easily differentiate between lists for work, home, or school. Additionally, 71 icons—from education to transportation to travel—and various emojis allow you to add a visual cue to your lists without needing to read their names.

Now, when you’re creating a new list, you’re asked to pick a color, emoji, and symbol. But if you already have several existing lists in the iOS or macOS Reminders app, here’s how to customize their appearance with color, an icon, or both. Note that changes you make on one device are automatically synced to all your other iCloud devices, so you can make adjustments on whichever device is most convenient.

On iPhone or iPad

  1. Open the Apple Reminders app.
  2. Touch and hold a list under the My Lists heading and choose Show List Info. You can also tap a list to open it, then tap the three dots icon and select Show List Info.
  3. Choose one of the twelve colors for the list name and the icon background.
  4. Next, pick one of the several symbols. To pick an emoji, tap the smiley face icon. Optionally, you can also change the name of your reminder list.
  5. Finally, tap Done to save your changes.
