Learn how to sort images and videos in the built-in Photos app on your iPhone or iPad by date or custom order to organize your library.
You can sort media in your Photos library in a few different ways, If you don’t know how to use this terrific feature, you’ve come to the right place.
Sort photos and videos in Apple’s Photos app
Open the Photos app on your iPhone or iPad and make sure you’re browsing the whole library instead of collections. Then, hit the dual-arrow icon in the bottom-right corner and choose Sort by Recently Added or Sort by Date Captured from the menu.
Sort by Recently Added lists the most recently added items first, followed by older media as you’re scrolling down. Sort by Date Captured organized your library based on capture date in metadata. To test this in action, snap a photo with your iPhone and change its timestamp to next year. It will appear at the bottom as the most recent item, followed by older photos, videos, screenshots, and other items above.
Sort media in photo albums
Open an album in Photos and hit the dual-arrow icon to reveal three sorting options: Sort by Oldest First, Sort by Newest First, and Sort by Custom Order.
We’ve explained the first two options in the previous section. The custom option lets you organize the album by holding any photo or video inside and dragging it to a new location. Shared Albums lack custom sorting but you can instead sort by Date Added.
Sort items elsewhere in Photos
Special collections like Selfies or Screenshots can also be sorted. Just select a section under the Media Types heading and choose to Sort by Oldest First or Sort by Newest First.
