You will soon be able to login to third party apps and services using your Apple ID

Cody Lee ∙ Updated July 1, 2019

We’re still swimming in all of the announcements Apple has made thus far during its WWDC keynote, but one in particular we knew was worth a quick mention is the new Sign in with Apple feature. As the name indicates, users will soon be able to login to third-party apps and services using their Apple ID and password.

Apple’s Craig Federighi noted that this will be “an easy way to sign in without the tracking”—clear shots at the likes of Google and Facebook. In fact, Federighi shows login buttons for both companies on screen as he talks about the new feature. As you’d expect, it uses Face ID and starts a new account “without revealing any personal information.” You can even choose to hide your email, in which case Apple will create a random email address that will forward you emails until you tell it to stop. Very cool!

I know a lot of folks who only keep Facebook accounts to login into certain apps, so it’ll be interesting to see what kind of impact this has on those use-cases. Anyway, we’re still following along live with Apple’s keynote, but will be updating this post later as more information becomes available, so be sure to check back in a bit!
