How to convert various image file types to JPG or PNG on iPhone or iPad

Check out two free ways to convert images on your iPhone and iPad between JPG, PNG, and other formats without using specialized websites.

Choosing image format after running an iOS shortcut to convert photos on iPhone

There are legitimate reasons to convert images on your iPhone or iPad from one file format to another. Maybe you’d like to convert a PNG screenshot to JPG to reduce file size or change a HEIF photograph to the ubiquitous JPF format that works virtually everywhere. You can convert image formats with free apps or dedicated shortcuts, and we show you how to use both.

Use a dedicated app for JPG-PNG conversion

The free JPEG-PNG Image app gets the job done without requiring you to use a desktop computer. Download it from the App Store, launch the app, choose Load a Photo, and select the image you’d like to convert. Next, choose Convert & Save, then select either Save as JPEG or Save as PNG. The app will save a converted image in the built-in Photos app.  Swipe up on the image or hit the info button ⓘ to check the image format.

The App Store has other image converters, but this app is free, super simple to use, and doesn’t ruin your image with a watermark. If you feel like checking out other options, then feel free to search the App Store and download apps with good ratings.

Convert images to JPG, PNG, and more with an iOS shortcut

If you don’t want to install apps just to convert image formats, we’ve created a simple shortcut that can convert images beyond JPN and PNG and perform batch conversions. Open this iCloud link in Safari on your iPhone or iPad to add the shortcut. Switch to the built-in Shortcuts app and tap the shortcut to run it. You can also add it to your Home Screen for quicker access. You can also use the shortcut form the share sheet: Open an image in the Photos app, hit the share icon, and choose iDB Convert Image. Next, select one or more images and then tap Add.

Open Convert Image shortcut and select images

Pick the target image format (PNG, JPG, TIFF, GIF, HEIF) and quality, then decide whether to preserve metadata or delete it.

Choose JPG, PNG, or other image format before converting

If asked, tap Always Allow. Lastly, tap Save Images and the shortcut will convert the selected image(s) to the chosen format and save it to the Photos app.

Cut down the extra steps!

Folks familiar with the Shortcuts app can edit our shortcut to their liking. For instance, you may want to set the shortcut to automatically convert images into the JPG format so you don’t have to choose the image format every time. Or, you could set a fixed image quality and turn off the Preserve Metadata toggle.

For those who don’t know how to edit these things, we’ve created two separate shortcuts. One converts images to JPG, and the other to PNG without any unnecessary steps. Just tap the shortcutselect one or more images, choose Add, and you’re done!

We’ve set image quality for both shortcuts to 100%, and enabled the option to preserve metadata in the converted image. Then again, you can easily turn these options off by editing the shortcut.
